No. 81 Joo Chiat Road Shop-House

Bringing a Joo Chiat shop-house into the present

The project begins with the building’s history. The ornate façade and the rhythm of the street are kept and restored, while the long, narrow interior is reorganised around light and air, so that each level feels open, bright and naturally ventilated.

New interventions are clearly of today but sit quietly beside the old fabric. Simple materials, a calm palette and carefully framed views let the original details stand out, creating a space that suits modern business while honouring the neighbourhood’s past.

The Principle of Conservation at TA.LE

Singapore’s shop-houses carry the memory of its streets. When we work with a heritage building, we study its structure, materials and craft first, and then add only what is needed to make it comfortable, safe and useful for the people who will use it next.

At No. 81 Joo Chiat Road, restoration and new design work together, so that the building feels both familiar and renewed.

Conservation is not about freezing a building in time, but about letting it continue to belong to its street.
